A Qualified Person (Investigational Medical Product) or QP(IMP) for short, is required to oversee and release Investigational Medical Products also known as clinical trial supplies. Without the authorization of a QP(IMP), clinical trial supplies cannot be sent to the trial site or given to trial patients. There are certain exemptions for pharmacists supplying trials taking place in their own hospitals, but for trials involving several UK hospital trusts, clinical trial products must be released by a QP(IMP).

Authorized clinical trial supplies can be shipped to other UK healthcare trusts, the rest of Europe and the world. However certain worldwide destinations may also require QP(IMP) release before clinical trial supplies can be distributed in their country. QP(IMP) release is a regulatory requirement.
