What are Placebos and Comparators?

In controlled clinical trials there is an active treatment group of patients, who receive the active drug, and there is also a control group of patients, who receive an inactive substance called a placebo. In comparator trials the active drug is compared with similar products which are already available on the market place. For the purpose of the trial these are called comparators, but they may be prescription drugs or well known brands. In blinded trials the patients must not be able to tell which treatment they are receiving, so the placebo and the active drug and any comparators must all look the same. This can be achieved by overencapsulating with the same colour capsule and filling any space inside to make sure the capsule weighs the same.
